What is LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy?

Affirming therapy means exactly what it sounds like: a space where you don't need to explain, justify, or educate before the real work begins. Whatever brought you here — questions about identity, the impact of a discriminatory environment, or simply wanting a therapist who gets it without the backstory — this is a space built for that. Ty identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community himself, which shapes the depth of understanding he brings to this work. This isn't a specialty he studied from the outside.

People come to Tenet Therapy for help with:

Coming Out · Sexual Identity Exploration · Gender Identity & Transition · Dating & Sex · Family & Relational Strain · Internalized Shame · Navigating Non-Affirming Environments · And More

Religious Trauma & Shame

The Approach

LGBTQ+ therapy at Tenet Therapy goes beyond simply being accepting. It means actively understanding the layered experience of growing up in a world that often hands you an identity before you're old enough to question it — and the work of unlearning that to find what's actually true for you.

This work draws on Narrative Therapy to examine and rewrite inherited stories about identity and worth, Polyvagal Theory to understand how the nervous system holds onto experiences of rejection or unsafety, and an existential humanistic lens focused on one core question: who are you, beneath everything you were told to be.

Shame often shows up quietly in this work — in the way you edit yourself, in the things you've never said out loud. Some of that shame has religious roots, and Ty has experience helping clients untangle faith, identity, and the belief systems they were raised in, at whatever pace that requires.

Gender Identity, Exploration & Transition

Support for every stage of the process.

Gender exploration and transition look different for everyone, and the support you need may change along the way. Ty works with clients exploring gender identity, navigating social or medical transition, and processing the relational and emotional layers that come with it. Instead of letting the world tell you what your gender is and what it is supposed to mean, lets define what your authentic connection to your gender is.

Tenet Therapy also provides letters of support for hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgery. If you're at this stage, reach out directly to discuss the process and what's needed.
